Client Story: Peter’s Journey from low energy to renewed plan for his future

Executive Summary: Peter, a 62-year-old leader in education, came to coaching during a time of multiple life transitions. Through eight virtual sessions, he learned to regulate stress in his body, expand his capacity under pressure, and communicate with more clarity. Results included improved sleep, renewed energy, and greater presence in relationships and decision-making — outcomes with direct value for leadership and career resilience.

Peter reached out for support as he was going through separation, job loss, and redefining his future. He came for support after moving into an apartment on his own. He described low energy, lack of motivation, and anger, and wanted practical somatic support to help him reset. He enjoys time outdoors but noticed he was becoming more isolated at home. All sessions were virtual.

Somatic coaching gave Peter tools to notice how stress showed up in his body, and to practice shifting those states. The goal was not abstract “mindset change,” but concrete outcomes: better energy, clearer communication, and more presence in daily life.

Session 1 — Awareness

We set goals and introduced the nervous system’s response to stress. Peter described feeling defeated, “killing his own joy,” and distancing himself from others. A slow somatic exercise helped him reconnect with his physicality — a tangible reminder that stress is experienced in the body, not only in the mind.

Session 2 — Regulation

Peter arrived feeling guarded, visible in his posture and tension. He shifted from cognitive overdrive into somatic awareness, naming feelings of shame, invisibility, and identity loss.

“Images of breaking to the surface… like from drowning — that’s what it felt like. That burst of air when you come back up.”

“This is me: swinging between forceful and soft. The in-between feels fake… like something needs draining. One side feels fluid, the other seized up.”

Feedback: “I feel more aware of my physicality. It gave me insight that was physically tangible.”

Session 3 — Regulation

Peter felt lost and angry after friends gave him unwanted advice “like a condescending pat on the head.” He used a picture as a resource and noticed his “monkey brain” racing.

“It’s fluctuating between relaxing and then tension coming back. Waves. That’s it.”

Reflection: “It’s surprising how fast I can come back when I remember I have a body. There’s a sense of well-being, because I’m caring for myself.”

This highlighted the corporate-relevant skill: the ability to shift from mental overdrive into steady physical presence under pressure.

Session 4 — Capacity Building

Peter reported low energy from poor sleep. We began with nervous system education and explored sensations of discomfort and lightheadedness. Eye and grounding exercises helped him return to a calm, alert state — a skill he could apply before important conversations or decisions.

Session 5 — Integration

Peter arrived with new energy:

“I feel… there’s like a power, if that’s the right word, a strength… a seed of something starting to grow.”

“It was just so easy to be me… a different part of me that doesn’t get expressed at other times.”

“It’s like a muscle that’s been dormant… starting to feel or be another part of me.”

“That’s new — to have that permission to just be ordinary… I don’t have to perform.”

This session focused on expanding communication choices and setting clearer boundaries.

Session 6 — Self-Compassion

Peter reported more clarity in decision-making, renewed self-care, and authenticity in relationships.

“I feel more self-compassion, self-love. I’ve let go of holding things down — emotions and tension. It’s energizing and beautiful.”

“I haven’t lost me. I can now reconnect and be present with me. I’m no longer rescuing the relationship — I’m doing it for me.”

Session 7 — Relaxation as Practice

Peter discovered his difficulty relaxing was linked to unsafety, hypervigilance, and constant strategizing.

“Relaxing isn’t easy — it has to be a process. It’s not safe to relax… If you’re at war all the time, you can’t just stop fighting.”

By the end, he reframed relaxation as an active skill that could be practiced and customized, rather than an impossible demand. This insight is critical for leaders who equate “slowing down” with weakness, rather than with capacity.

Session 8 — Expanding Choice

Peter reported the pressure to be productive had lifted. He enjoyed reading and relaxing without guilt. In a partnership, he voiced discomfort instead of withdrawing: “A new conversation, a new vista, a new choice.”

The session also addressed his fear of “jinxing himself.” He finished with more flexibility and a desire to return to hobbies he once enjoyed.

Progress Update

Peter reported feeling calmer, sleeping better, and experiencing “less hypervigilance.” He described “really being in myself,” letting go, returning to hobbies, and enjoying life more. In relationships, he practiced receiving more and giving less.

For Peter, somatic work built capacity that translated into clearer decisions, more consistent energy, and stronger presence with others — benefits that directly support leadership and career transitions.
